It’s wild that these two teams are separated by just a tie in the standings — and even stranger that we’re discussing Dallas in the same breath as the Detroit Lions. But here we are, and we’re backing the underdog on Thursday Night Football.

There has been a clear shift defensively in Dallas since the trade deadline and momentum of a shock return to the playoffs is in the air for the Cowboys. They have taken out last year’s Super Bowl teams in consecutive weeks and they are set to take another big NFC scalp in primetime as the Lions head into this game without one of the big weapons Amon Ra St. Brown.
Both offences do have the potential still to go big but the edge has to be with the Cowboys receiving core on the end of Dak Prescott who is in arguably career-best form. Detroit can let a deep-ball in and Prescott likes to connect with both CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens downfield.
I am jumping on Lamb’s longest reception and the over on Pickens’ receiving total, however will likely play both markets for both receivers up against the Detroit secondary that averages the fourth-worst yards per completion.

Dallas are on a tear and are emerging as a shock inclusion into the playoff picture after taking out both Super Bowl teams in consecutive weeks, beating 24-21 and following that up on a short 4-day turnaround, claiming the scalp of the Chiefs 31-28.
The Cowboys were the worst defensive team in the NFL, but after the trade deadline and the additions of Quinnen Williams and DeMarvion Overshown along with building their depth and rotations their defence has lifted. The unit is now hitting well under their season averages of opposition yardage and points over their last 3 matches and are now a top-half defensive unit.
On offence it has been business as usual with George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb connecting with Dak Prescott and putting up 29.2 points a game while taking more yards on offence than any team in the NFL.
Detroit Lions Form
The last 8 games for Detroit have followed the win-loss patter and it was a tough 31-24 defeat to Green Bay that has them outside the playoff bracket in the NFC. Adding salt to the wound Amon Ra St. Brown went down in the first quarter and did not return, obviously hurting their ability to attack in the air.
With St. Brown very unlikely the Lions are going to have to lean heavily on their run game on offence, which is a positive considering the combination of David Montgomery and more so Jahmyr Gibbs have Detroit as the fourth-best rushing team in the NFL with an average of 138.1 yards per game.
Defensively the Lions are mid-range allowing 22.8 points per game (15th) to their opposition while ranking 14th in the NFL with an average of 212.5 opposition passing yards per game but are 29th with 11.0 yards per completion.
