Slow Starts, Short Rotations: The JackJumpers’ Growing Problem
- Tasmania's slow starts lead to early deficits, impacting game dynamics.
- Adjustments like Majok Deng’s bench role have boosted later game stages.
- Consistent strong starts are vital for sustainable success and development.
The Tasmania JackJumpers are winning games again, but the way they are getting there should still concern fans and coaches alike.
A recurring issue has emerged over recent weeks: slow starts that force the team into catch-up mode far too early, shrinking rotations and limiting development opportunities.
The numbers tell the story. Tasmania has repeatedly found itself facing double-digit deficits after the first quarter, including heavy early losses against Southeast Melbourne, Cairns and New Zealand. While the JackJumpers have shown grit and resilience to claw their way back, this pattern is not sustainable over a long season
When games begin this way, Scott Roth’s hand is forced. The margin for error disappears, rotations tighten, and bench players, particularly development prospects, struggle to find meaningful minutes. Nick “The Dart” Stoddart is a prime example. Despite showing an ability to score quickly when given opportunities, his court time has been minimal, largely because the team is constantly chasing the scoreboard rather than protecting a lead.
Hurting Development
The flow-on effect is significant. Development players are being thrown into high-pressure moments instead of controlled situations where they can play freely. Confidence, rhythm and growth all suffer when minutes only come during desperation basketball.
Recent adjustments, such as returning Majok Deng to an impact role off the bench, have helped spark momentum later in games. Deng’s energy, rebounding and clutch scoring have been vital. But these fixes address symptoms, not the cause. The real issue remains how Tasmania starts games.
Tassie Win Ugly
The JackJumpers are built to win ugly through defence, physicality and control. To do that consistently, they must stop giving opponents early breathing room. Winning from behind is admirable. Starting strong is essential.
If Tasmania wants success that lasts beyond heroic comebacks, the first quarter needs to become a strength, not a survival exercise.
