The premiership core that peaked in 2021 has splintered. Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver are gone. A new coach takes control of a list that still has elite pillars in Max Gawn and defence, but far less certainty through the middle.

This is not a full rebuild. It is a recalibration.

The Demons still have structure. The question is whether they have enough spark.

What 2026 Is About

This season is about redistribution of responsibility.

For years Melbourne’s midfield identity revolved around contested dominance driven by Petracca and Oliver. That safety net is gone. The Dees now need a collective solution rather than two match winners.

If the next layer steps up quickly, Melbourne remain competitive. If they hesitate, the gap between them and the top tier widens.

Where They Improve

The defensive core remains strong. Steven May, Jake Lever and emerging intercept options like Daniel Turner provide stability. Max Gawn still gives Melbourne first use more often than not.

Up forward, the arrival of Brody Mihocek provides genuine presence. He is not there to kick 60 goals. He is there to compete, create space and stabilise structure. That should directly benefit Jacob van Rooyen, who has carried unrealistic expectation in an undermanned forward line.

Kysaiah Pickett is the genuine difference maker. If he sustains high midfield exposure while maintaining scoreboard impact, Melbourne gain star power that lifts the entire side.

Where It Breaks Down

Midfield uncertainty is the obvious risk.

Without Petracca and Oliver, Melbourne lose proven clearance output and composure. Jack Viney provides hardness, but the overall mix is unproven at sustained elite level.

Their clearance ranking slipped in 2025 despite Gawn’s ruck dominance. If that inefficiency continues, Melbourne will struggle to generate consistent inside 50 quality.

Forward consistency also remains a question. Van Rooyen must progress. If he stalls again, scoring becomes overly dependent on bursts rather than system.

The Pickett Pivot

For Melbourne, the defining lever is how far Kysaiah Pickett can carry this midfield.

He is already attending high centre bounce numbers and averaging near elite midfield output while still kicking multiple goals per game. The next step is sustainability. If he becomes a genuine 20 disposal, two goal player across a full season, Melbourne’s ceiling shifts immediately.

That evolution would give the Dees midfield dynamism they have lacked when the game slows. It also forces defensive attention away from younger midfielders finding their feet.

If Pickett plateaus rather than ascends, the burden spreads thinly across too many developing players.
