Round 5 of the 2026 AFL home-and-away season heads to Adelaide for the annual Gather Round, with the Adelaide Crows hosting Carlton on Thursday night in the first of nine matches.
There are several blockbuster match-ups across the weekend, highlighted by Collingwood vs Fremantle on Friday night and Hawthorn vs the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.
Here is our preview of all the action, including predictions and suggested bets.
Thursday April 9
Adelaide Crows v Carlton, Adelaide Oval (7.40pm)
Adelaide can finally break the shackles with the four-quarter performance they have been building towards, and this looks the ideal matchup to do it against a Carlton side that continues to crumble under repeat waves in its defensive half. The Blues let a 22-point final-quarter lead slip against North Melbourne last week, while the Crows pushed Fremantle to the brink despite a horror 0-10 start in first-quarter clearances before finishing on top in the second half. If Adelaide simply break even early at stoppage, their forward-half pressure and cleaner clearance connection should turn this into a one-way game. Ben Keays and Izak Rankine are perfectly placed to cash in on Carlton’s loose defensive transitions, making Adelaide -29.5, Keays 2+ goals, Rankine 2+ goals and the under the standout betting plays.
Friday April 10
Collingwood v Fremantle, Adelaide Oval (7.40pm)
This shapes as trouble for Collingwood, with Fremantle the clear value in the head-to-head market after the Magpies were badly exposed by Brisbane’s stoppage dominance and inside-50 pressure in last week’s 54-point defeat. That blueprint stacks up perfectly for a Dockers side that continues to mature, coming off a pressure-filled two-point win over Adelaide that should give them enormous belief. Fremantle look set to challenge exactly where Brisbane hurt Collingwood — stoppage, contest-to-contest spread and aerial defence — while the absence of Darcy Moore leaves Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss primed to get off the leash. The best angles are Fremantle head-to-head, Josh Treacy 3+ goals and Andrew Brayshaw 25+ disposals, with 30+ holding strong value.
Saturday April 11
North Melbourne v Brisbane Lions, Barossa Park (12.35pm)
North Melbourne face their toughest test of the season and this shapes as a brutal reality check against a Brisbane side beginning to look every bit the premiership force again after dismantling Collingwood with 34 scoring shots. The Kangaroos absolutely have the midfield weapons to stay in it through Luke Davies-Uniacke, Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw, and their contested work should keep them highly competitive for large periods, but Brisbane’s elite transition chains, outside polish and ability to punish turnovers should create scoreboard separation late. With both sides averaging just under 100 points per game, the total points over looks the strongest angle, while Brisbane 1-39, Luke Davies-Uniacke 25+ disposals and Charlie Cameron 2+ goals all fit the profile.
Essendon v Melbourne, Adelaide Oval (1.15pm)
The winless Bombers can absolutely push the rejuvenated Demons in what shapes as a genuine Gather Round danger game for Melbourne. Essendon’s 0-4 record undersells how well they played after quarter time against the Bulldogs, while likely inclusions and Zach Merrett’s current ball-winning form make them far more dangerous than their ladder position suggests. Melbourne deserve favouritism with their pressure, corridor speed and stoppage dominance under Steven King, but Gather Round history between these clubs points to a much tighter contest than the market may suggest. Melbourne 1-39 or Essendon +28.5 both appeal strongly, with Zach Merrett 30+ disposals and Kozzie Pickett 2+ goals the key same-game multi plays.
Sydney Swans v Gold Coast Suns, Norwood Oval (4.15pm)
Sydney can hand Gold Coast back-to-back losses in what shapes as the shootout of Gather Round, with the Swans’ profile perfectly suited to beat the Suns at their own game. Sydney rank No.1 in the AFL for metres gained and also sit ahead of Gold Coast for both clearance differential and contested possession differential, exactly where Melbourne exposed the Suns last week. The ruck battle between Brodie Grundy and Jarrod Witts looms as the defining factor, and if Grundy can again provide first use, Sydney’s corridor movement should generate repeat scoring looks in what should be a scoreboard frenzy between the AFL’s top two scoring sides. Sydney head-to-head with Charlie Curnow 3+ goals and Ben King 3+ goals are the standout plays.
Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs, Adelaide Oval (7.35pm)
Hawthorn are set to hand the Western Bulldogs their first loss of the season, with Sam Mitchell’s pressure-first blueprint stacking up perfectly against a Dogs side carrying major injury concerns. The Hawks have won the past four between the sides and are ideally built to force the Bulldogs into the rushed exits and fumbles that Luke Beveridge referenced last week, while the absences of Tim English, Ed Richards, Arty Jones and Tom Liberatore further expose their midfield depth. Hawthorn’s back six also has the size and intercept craft to blunt Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy. Hawthorn head-to-head, Nick Watson 2+ goals and Jai Newcombe 25+ disposals are the best betting angles.
Sunday April 12
Geelong Cats v West Coast Eagles, Norwood Oval (12.30pm)
Geelong can bounce back in emphatic fashion after their one-point loss to Hawthorn, with this looking the perfect matchup against a West Coast side that copped a brutal 128-point reality check against Sydney. The Cats were below their best in key moments last week but still pushed a quality Hawthorn side to the brink, which points to a far cleaner performance here against an Eagles outfit that continues to struggle badly against elite midfield systems. Jeremy Cameron is the obvious bounce-back player and looks perfectly placed to return to form closer to goal, while Bailey Smith should again find plenty of the footy. Geelong -39.5, Jeremy Cameron 3+ goals and Bailey Smith 30+ disposals are the clear plays.
GWS Giants v Richmond, Barossa Park (3.15pm)
GWS should be far too polished for Richmond and this shapes as another percentage-building afternoon for the Giants. Their midfield depth, pressure game and ability to punish turnover football remain significant weapons against young sides, and Richmond still struggle badly when forced to defend repeat entries. Expect Tom Green and the Giants midfield to dominate territory, setting up Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan for strong scoreboard returns. GWS 40+, Toby Greene 2+ goals and Tom Green 30+ disposals look the strongest angles.
Port Adelaide v St Kilda, Adelaide Oval (7.15pm)
This is St Kilda’s game to lose, but there should be a few nervous moments in one of the more important Gather Round clashes with both sides sitting 2-2. The Saints can take confidence from their 17-point win at Adelaide Oval the last time these sides met, and their recent body of work looks stronger despite the 33-point loss to Brisbane, where they were highly competitive for long periods before the premiers kicked away late. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s ball use and ability to control possession should be critical in denying Port repeat slingshot looks, while Cooper Sharman remains the standout forward prop. St Kilda head-to-head, Wanganeen-Milera 25+ disposals and Cooper Sharman 2+ goals are the best plays.
