- Carlton Blues -18.5

- What could go wrong?
The Blues’ midfield depth should prove decisive against a Tigers lineup still developing consistency.
How this game shapes up
Carlton’s opening round loss to Sydney was difficult viewing for Blues fans.
After a competitive first half, the match completely slipped away as the Swans piled on 12 goals in the third quarter on their way to a 63-point victory.
Despite the result, Carlton’s midfield still showed its strength.
Sam Walsh and Patrick Cripps continue to lead one of the deepest on-ball rotations in the competition and their ability to control stoppages should give the Blues plenty of forward opportunities.
Richmond remain in the middle of a rebuild.
The Tigers finished near the bottom of the ladder last season and are continuing to develop a young list that is still learning to compete consistently at AFL level.
Best Bets
Carlton Blues -18.5
Carlton’s midfield depth and ability to control territory should give them a clear advantage. Against a young Richmond side, the Blues should be able to generate enough scoring opportunities to cover the line.
Sam Walsh 30+ Disposals
Walsh continues to be Carlton’s primary ball-winner and has averaged 30 disposals across his past four matches.
What could go wrong?
Carlton’s biggest concern remains scoreboard conversion and if they fail to capitalise on their midfield dominance the margin could remain closer than expected.
Richmond’s young players also bring energy and pressure which can disrupt the flow of the game if the contest becomes scrappy.
Verdict
Carlton respond strongly at the MCG, covering the line with Sam Walsh leading the midfield while Tim Taranto racks up disposals for Richmond.
