Round 8 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Thursday evening when Collingwood take on Hawthorn under the MCG lights.

There are nine games in store across the round, including the Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide on Friday evening, while the action concludes when Gold Coast host GWS

Here is a snapshot of each match and some suggested betting angles.

Thursday April 30

Collingwood v Hawthorn, MCG (7:30pm)

Hawthorn can extend their winning streak and cover the line against Collingwood, with their pressure and forward-half dominance set to expose a Magpies side that has struggled against finalists. The Hawks’ ability to generate turnover and punish on the scoreboard should create separation, particularly with their multiple avenues to goal through Jack Gunston and Nick Watson. Collingwood will find plenty through Nick Daicos and Scott Pendlebury, but Hawthorn’s system and consistency give them the edge. Hawthorn - line, Jai Newcombe 25+ disposals and Nick Watson 2+ goals are the key plays.

Friday May 1

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle, Marvel Stadium (7:20pm)

Fremantle look set to continue their surge with a comfortable win over a Bulldogs side that is reeling from injuries and heavy defeats. The Dockers’ midfield depth and ability to control territory should overwhelm the Dogs, who have been conceding heavily and struggling to defend aerial threats. Shai Bolton looms as a major influence again, while Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw should dominate around the contest. Fremantle - line, Shai Bolton 2+ goals and Caleb Serong 30+ disposals are the standout angles.

Adelaide Crows v Port Adelaide, Adelaide Oval (8:10pm)

Port Adelaide can take it right up to Adelaide and look strong value with the start in what shapes as a tight Showdown. Their midfield, led by Zak Butters and Jason Horne-Francis, has been in strong form and should be able to generate scoring opportunities against a Crows side that has struggled to contain momentum swings. Adelaide will have their moments through Izak Rankine and Jordan Dawson, but Port’s pressure and territory game can keep them within the number. Port Adelaide +12.5, Zak Butters 30+ disposals and Izak Rankine 2+ goals appeal.

Saturday May 2

Essendon v Brisbane Lions, Marvel Stadium (1:15pm)

Brisbane should be far too strong for Essendon in what shapes as an open, uncontested game at Marvel Stadium, perfectly suited to the Lions’ ball movement and midfield accumulation. Lachie Neale and Will Ashcroft are primed to rack up big numbers against a Bombers side that has consistently been beaten through possession chains, while the premiership favourites, Brisbane, strong ability to generate repeat inside 50s should translate to scoreboard pressure. Essendon will have some contributors, but their defensive issues remain a major concern. Brisbane - line, Lachie Neale 30+ disposals and Zac Bailey 2+ goals are the strongest plays.

West Coast Eagles v Richmond Tigers, Optus Stadium (4:15pm)

This is a low-confidence matchup, but Richmond look the better betting angle with the start against a West Coast side that has completely fallen away in recent weeks. The Eagles have been uncompetitive defensively and struggled to score, while Richmond have at least shown an ability to stay in games for periods. Expect a scrappy contest with plenty of stoppages, bringing midfielders into play. Richmond + line, Tim Taranto 25+ disposals and Harley Reid 25+ disposals are the key angles.

Geelong Cats v North Melbourne Kangaroos, GMHBA Stadium (4:35pm)

Geelong can bounce back strongly at their home fortress and cover the line against North Melbourne, with their system and ability to control territory set to prove decisive. The Cats have dominated this matchup historically and should generate repeat inside 50s against a Roos side that still concedes heavily in losses. Jeremy Cameron looms as the major beneficiary up forward, while Bailey Smith should continue his strong midfield form. Geelong - line, Jeremy Cameron 3+ goals and Bailey Smith 30+ disposals stand out.

Carlton Blues v St Kilda Saints, Marvel Stadium (7:35pm)

This shapes as a tight, low-scoring arm wrestle, with Carlton well placed to stay within the line against a St Kilda side that prefers contested, territory-based battles. Both teams have struggled to put games away, and recent trends suggest another close result. Carlton’s midfield, led by Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh, should ensure they remain competitive, while St Kilda’s defensive system keeps scoring in check. Carlton + line, total points under, Sam Walsh 30+ disposals and Jack Sinclair 25+ disposals are the best plays.

Sunday May 3

Sydney Swans v Melbourne Demons, SCG (3:15pm)

Sydney should get the job done at the SCG, but Melbourne loom as genuine value with the start in what shapes as a far more competitive contest than the market suggests. The Swans’ ability to generate repeat inside 50s and score heavily gives them the edge, but Melbourne’s midfield depth and scoring spread can keep them in the game. The Demons’ strong recent form and solid head-to-head record suggest they can push Sydney deep into the fourth quarter. Melbourne +32.5, Jack Steele 25+ disposals and Chad Warner 25+ disposals are the key plays.

Gold Coast Suns v GWS Giants, People First Stadium (7:20pm)

GWS present as outstanding value against Gold Coast, with their ability to exploit the Suns’ defensive issues and control transition likely to be a decisive factor. The Giants thrive in open play and should be able to generate scoring opportunities through Toby Greene and their running defenders, while Gold Coast have struggled to apply pressure and contain opposition scoring. Expect GWS to take control in a free-flowing contest. GWS head-to-head, Toby Greene 2+ goals and Lachie Whitfield 30+ disposals are the standout selections.
