Hawthorn Hawks vs Sydney Swans Tips and Prediction

Hawthorn return to the MCG after a dominant Round 1 performance and face a Sydney side that also impressed in their season opener.

With both teams showing strong early form, this matchup shapes as one of the standout games of Round 2.

Hawthorn’s ability to control tempo at the MCG could prove the decisive factor.

How this game shapes up

Hawthorn delivered one of the most impressive performances of Round 1 when they dismantled Essendon by 62 points.

Sam Mitchell’s side dominated territory and possession, finishing with a massive inside-50 advantage.

The Hawks thrive when they control the ball through their kick-mark system, stretching the field and creating repeat forward entries.

Jack Gunston has been a major weapon early in the season, kicking nine goals across his first two matches, while Nick Watson continues to provide pressure and creativity at ground level.

Sydney arrive in strong form after their convincing victory over Brisbane.

The Swans’ ability to rebound quickly from defence and move the ball with speed makes them a dangerous opponent.

Joel Amartey has been outstanding inside forward 50, while Callum Mills and Justin McInerney will be key figures in the midfield battle.

However, Sydney will be without Errol Gulden which removes an important creative element from their midfield.

Best Bets

Hawthorn 1-39 Winning Margin

Both teams appear capable of challenging deep into the season, but Hawthorn’s strong record at the MCG and ability to control tempo should give them the edge.

Karl Amon 25+ Disposals

Amon’s run and ball movement from half back are crucial to Hawthorn’s game style and he regularly finds plenty of possession in this role.

What could go wrong?

Sydney’s ability to move the ball quickly through the corridor could challenge Hawthorn’s defensive structure.

If the Swans generate speed from half back and supply their tall forwards with quality entries, they have the weapons to keep the pressure on.

But if Hawthorn control territory and possession at the MCG, they should be able to dictate the pace of the game.
