St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights Tips and Prediction

The Knights are tipped to continue the Dragons’ nightmare start to the season with another high-scoring win on Saturday afternoon.

How this game shapes up

St George Illawarra’s season continues to spiral.

Twelve straight losses, heavy defensive collapses, and ongoing instability around the club have created a difficult environment for interim coach Dean Young.

While there were some positive signs from young halfback Kade Reed in his debut, the Dragons still look vulnerable defensively and are struggling to contain sides with attacking speed and creativity.

That is a dangerous combination against Newcastle.

The Knights finally welcomed back key attacking stars last week and immediately exploded for 42 points against South Sydney. Kalyn Ponga, Dylan Brown and Fletcher Sharpe all looked dangerous with ball in hand, while the outside backs benefited from improved ruck speed and second-phase play.

Newcastle’s defence remains a concern after conceding 38 points themselves, but this matchup still strongly favours their attacking strengths.

The Dragons have conceded heavily in recent weeks and continue to struggle defending transitions and edge movement, two areas where Newcastle excel.

Best Bets

Knights -8.5

Newcastle’s attacking upside should prove too much for the Dragons.

Over 51.5 Total Points

The Knights are scoring heavily, but their own defence leaves the door open for points at both ends.

Kalyn Ponga Anytime Tryscorer

Ponga thrives in broken play and has an outstanding tryscoring record against the Dragons.

What could go wrong?

If Newcastle’s defence continues to leak points and the Dragons improve with Gutherson’s return, the margin could stay closer than expected.
