italian serie a Preview

Serie A The Italian Serie A is Italian football's top professional football division and is regarded as one of the most elite leagues of the footballing world.

The top echelon of Italian football was organised in regional groups from 1898 to 1928. Serie A was formed in 1929 to replace the regional rounds to just one solid league. The Serie A title is often referred to as the scudetto (small shield) because since the 1924-25 season the winning team will bear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolour on their strip in the following season.

Over the years the Serie A was considered the pinacle of football especially in the 1980's and 1990's where Italian clubs often featured in European Cup and UEFA Cup Finals. Serie A has produced the highest number of European Cup finalists with a record twenty-five different occasions, winning the title eleven times.

The league season lasts from August to May with each club playing each team twice (one and Home and one Away), with the team sitting top with the most points crowned League Champions at the end of the season. If points are equal between two or more clubs, head-to-head results usually determine their placement. As well as the Serie A Champions, the teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th qualify for Europe's elite competition the UEFA Champions League. The 5th and 6th placed teams automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League. The three lowest placed teams in Serie A are relegated to the Serie B, and the top three teams from the Serie B are promoted to Serie A.

The most successful team in Serie A history is Juventus with 27 titles followed by A.C. Milan with 17 titles, Internazionale with 17 and Genoa with 9. As tradition, for every ten titles won, the clubs are allowed to wear a golden star above their club badge.
