The Chinese Grand Prix hosts race 4 of the Formula 1 season on April 18th at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The Shanghai International Circuit is the most expensive F1 circuit facility, costing $240 million and features one of the trickiest corners combinations on the Formula 1 calendar. The shape of the circuit is designed to look like the Chinese character 'Shang' which means high or above, and there are also other echoes of traditional Chinese architecture, including the team buildings set on stilts in the lake.

The Chinese government had been trying to host a race since the early 1990's and 2004 seen them get their wish when they agreed a seven-year deal to host the Chinese Grand Prix. The newly built circuit was funded by a government-backed joint-venture company which has since seen the former manager of the circuit Yu Zhifei convicted of embezzlement in a corruption scandal, along with several other senior communist party officials who also lost their jobs.

In 2006 the race which was then the final race of the season, saw Michael Schumacher's final grand prix victory before his retirement. The 2010 season will see the German coming out of retirement as the F1 legend returns to the circuit.
