The A-Leaguen is Australian football's Premier professional football division run by the Australian governing body Football Federation Australia.
The league was only recently formed in 2004 after the collapse of the National Soccer League, with its inaugural season in 2005-06. It is sponsored by Hyundai Motor Company Australia and is contested by ten teams: nine located across Australia and one from New Zealand. The inaugural season proved an outstanding success, capped off by a capacity crowd on hand to witness the Grand Final in Sydney. Crowds exceeded expectations with over one million fans going through the turnstiles during the season at an average of 11,627 per game.
Such was the success of the inaugural season, broadcast partner Fox Sports was quick to negotiate a new revised 7-year-TV deal, which went a long way to providing financial stability for the competition and in particular the clubs.
The following three seasons has been just as successful with crowd averages, TV ratings and media coverage increasing, along with interest for several new franchise clubs looking for enrty into the competition.
The league season lasts from August to February with each team playing each other team three times – twice at one team's home stadium and once at the other's. The club at the top of this league at the end of the 27 weekly rounds is crowned A-League Premiers. The top six-ranked teams at the end of the regular season are entered into a playoff system over 4 weeks consisting of knockout games until only two teams remain to compete in a season-ending Grand Final to crown the A-League Champions.
Sydney FC were crowned the inaugural Champions after winning the Grand Final with Melborne Victory being crowned Champions in 2 of the last three seasons, with a title for Newcastle Jets in between. Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United have both been in two Grand Finals each but have been on the losing side each time.
